Этот образ использовался и раньше: как символ растущего рабочего движения его использовал в политической карикатуре Томас Наст [Nast, Thomas] еще в 1880, политику "полного обеденного судка" упоминал в 1894 Т. Рузвельт [Roosevelt, Theodore (Teddy)]. В 1928 кандидат Республиканской партии - "партии процветания" ["prosperity party"] Г. Гувер [Hoover, Herbert Clark] попытался осовременить этот лозунг, заявив: "Лозунг прогресса меняется - от полного обеденного судка к полному гаражу" ["The slogan of progress is changing from the full dinner pail to the full garage"].
